Unlike .com, .net or any other popular domains which cater to the worldwide public, .sg domains are only meant for those in Singapore. This domain stands for Singapore and is meant for those businesses which are local to this place. And registering such domains is a little bit tricky and complex as compared to popular ones like .com.

When you register for country domain .sg, your domains can also be like “.com.sg”, “.org.sg”, and so on, other than a simple “.sg” domain. And all of this is taken care by SGNIC (.sg domains registry).

One of my friends was working on car battery replacement in Singapore. He is having a physical shop there. But he wanted to open up a website, which catered purely to the Singapore audience. So what better than getting a .sg domain, instead of .com, right? And when I happened to meet him one day, he was curious to know how to register such a domain. So it because of him and many such people, that I am writing this article.

Here I will let you know some of the requirements which you need to fulfill before you get your .sg domain registered.

Who can register?

This domain can not be registered by any and everybody. You need to have a local presence in Singapore, or an agent who is located in Singapore and is a citizen there. Besides this, you also need to have a Foreign Identification Number (FIN). Also known as National Registration Identification Card (NRIC), it is the admin ID that you will be using while registering.

Now there are 2 possibilities from here.

Individual

If you are registering as an individual, you can only register for “.sg” domains. For this, you would have to fill out the following information.

  • “Administrative contact” field with a valid Singapore postal address.
  • No need for “organization name” and “job title” anywhere in the form.
  • A valid “Registrant” and “Administrative identification form” which is a Singaporean ID card number, also called “SingPass ID”. This must be in #0000000@ format. This ID can be NRIC if you are a local citizen, or FIN if you are a foreigner.

Organization

An organization can register for all kinds of “.sg” domains. Some rules are same with Organization registrant type, as those of an Individual type.

  • “Administrative contact” field with a valid Singapore postal address.
  • “Organization name” and “Job title” are not to be filled in “Administrative contact” field. But these are definitely to be filled in “Registrant contact” field.
  • The organization name should exactly be same as that associated with Unique Entity Number (UEN).
  • A valid “Registrant Identification form” – to be filled with company registration number (UEN).
  • “Administrative identification form” which is a Singaporean ID card number (SingPass ID).

Besides these, the administrative contact also has to complete the verification (먹튀검증) process, within 21 days from the date of registration. You can do this through 2 ways:

  • Click on the link sent by SGNIC on the administrative contact’s email id when you register.
  • Or, you can directly go to VerifiedID@SG portal.

That would help you complete your registration for a .sg domain name.
